THE ISLAND OF KOH TRONG

For travellers in north-east Cambodia, the roads to Laos, Ratanakiri and Mondolkiri all converge at Kratié, a small town on the banks of the Mekong, where you usually spend just one night because you don’t know what the region has to offer.
However, just a short distance from Kratie, in the middle of the Mekong, there is another Cambodia, a Cambodia barely touched by modern civilisation.
Surrounded by fine sandy beaches for 6 months of the year, constantly refreshed by the river breeze, the island of Koh Trong is almost the ideal Cambodia, the one sought in vain by many travellers disappointed by the bad modernism now affecting the land of smiles.
No cars but carts, smiling peasants, chiselled fishermen and a rich land that the men have turned into an orchard, ‘Koh del Trong bat Cheunchien’, ‘the island where the king lost his ring’ which has been shortened to ‘Koh Trong’, the royal island, is a little paradise.

Thanks to Soriyabori you can drop off your suitcases there !

Soriyabori Resort – A Cambodian experience

The Soriyabori is a ‘confidential resort’ of 15 Khmer villas, located on the north of the island of Koh Trong opposite Kratie. We created it to offer travellers who love nature and discovery the chance to immerse themselves in an unspoilt part of traditional Cambodia. Access is by boat, then moped, tuktuk or horse-drawn cart.
The walk through the island’s countryside is superb, but a little time-consuming, so we advise those in a hurry or put off by the various manifestations of nature (insects, frogs, etc.) to stay in Kratie, as Koh Trong is clearly not for them!

Our idea is to recreate an old-fashioned Cambodian village in the protected environment of Koh Trong island.
Everywhere else in Cambodia, traditional wooden houses are being demolished to make way for concrete ones. An entire architectural heritage of incalculable value is being mercilessly swept under the carpet… So we wanted to buck this trend by bringing together a number of skilled craftsmen who are perpetuating an age-old know-how.
Naturally ventilated, our rooms are not air-conditioned but equipped with fans.
